Black Friday Morphing Into Thursday For NH Shoppers
BOSTON (CBS) --- Retailers continue to push the envelope when it comes to opening up on Thanksgiving Day.
"I don't like it," said shopper Tammey Roy. "I think the holidays are supposed to be about family."
Black Friday is morphing into Thursday.
Kmart is opening up at 6 a.m. on the holiday.
Best Buy is opening up at 6 p.m., six hours earlier than last year.
Many other stores like Target and and Toys "R" Us are also opening up on Thanksgiving.
"I think it's terrible for the employees but it gives people another day to shop that they don't have to work," sad shopper Susan Medor.
At the Best Buy in Manchester, New Hampshire, manager Paul Woodbury says store employees will not be forced to work on the holiday.
"We're giving the employees the opportunity to volunteer," said Woodbury. "We're not making anybody have to work. If they want to spend the quality time with their family, we're letting them do that."
Matt Mowry, editor of Buisness NH Magazine, says the earlier hours have to with competition among retailers during the critical holiday rush.
"Retailers are feeling the pressure," said Mowry. "They're having to eke out as much revenue as they can during that time period. I think there is a certain segment of shoppers that are turned off by retailers being open during that holiday but there's another segment that just see it as an opportunity to get out there and get some deep discounts."
