Bikes Creating Havoc In Boston Tunnel Memorial Day Weekend Confiscated
DORCHESTER (CBS) - A total of nine bikes and three engines were confiscated by police on Friday from a Dorchester home.
"That's nine we took off the street today additional 7 last week," Boston Police Department Michael McCarthy said.
It's all part of the city's effort to make Boston streets and highways safe from dangerous scenes like this one.
MassDOT cameras spotted dozens of motorcycles, dirt bikes, and ATVs creating havoc in the Tip O'Neill Tunnel over the Memorial Day weekend.
"It's (a) public safety issue. They are riding up and down Blue Hill, weaving in-and-out of traffic," McCarthy said.
The owner of confiscated bikes was not arrested or charged with anything and feels he's being target by police.
"We can't have fun? We can't ride our bikes! They told me I can't work on my bike. I can't fix my own bike in the back yard. It's private property," one man said.
Police say it's a safety hazard.
"When you have that many dirt bikes and ATVs and gasoline, there's some potential for some danger and that's why we are here," McCarthy said.
Authorities encourage residents if they see bikers riding dangerously to call police.
"We are making a plea if you see these types of vehicles or know where they are being stored, you can call us anonymously," McCarthy said.
Police are looking into whether or not the owner of the property will be cited for code violations.
