Underground Fire Knocks Out Power In Beverly

BEVERLY (CBS) – An underground fire in Beverly knocked out power for several hundred residents and temporarily impacted phone lines at City Hall and the fire department.

Around 7:30 a.m on Thursday a transformer caught fire on Cabot Street.

Power was out for about 730 customers.

Because City Hall and Beverly Fire Department phone lines are down, anyone with a a potential emergency was asked to call 911 during the outage.

Power was restored at about 8:00 p.m.

Though the fire was close to a building in the area, only smoke got inside, no flames.

Due to frigid temperatures in the area, a shelter and nearby churches were open for anyone without power who needed to keep warm.
