Best Summer Arts On Cape Cod

Summer on the Cape usually means frolicking fun by the beach, but there are also a number of arts and music events worth checking out for those in a cultural mindset. We round up some of the great happenings at Cape Cod so you can get your culture fix this summer. - By Hayley David

A sculpture created by Lorrie Fredette specifically for the Bank of America/Hunter Gallery, The Great Silence is an impressive sight. Made of beeswax, tree resin, muslin, brass, steel and nylon line, the sculpture will be suspended from the beams in the gallery. Inspired by medical sciences, Fredetter creates site-specific installations that comment on the distortion of memory and experience. She employs beauty, dimension and place as part of a process of alteration.

Can children's lunchboxes be considered art? Find out at this unique exhibit at the Addison Art Gallery featuring delicately and artistically painted lunchboxes by artists from across the Cape. Vera Champlin, Ken Northup, Paul Schulenberg, Paul Suggs, Vincent Amicosante, Rick Fleury, and Jim Holland are among the many award-winning artists who have painted unique lunch boxes in support of the Cape Cod Children's Place, a family resource center offering early childhood programs, child care scholarships and parenting support.

Nothing screams (or sings) summer like the Beach Boys. Returning to perform an afternoon concert at the Melody Tent, the quintessential all-American band will play their hits for the summer crowd. Get ready to sing and dance to "Surfin' Safari," "Surf City," and "California Girls," and wax nostalgic for the sunny, pop sounds of the 60s.

m/v Prudence: 100 Years

This is a celebratory exhibit for the m/v Prudence, the oldest continuous working passenger vessel in America, which turns 100 this year. According to Hy-Line Cruises (which is collaborating with the Cape Cod Maritime Museum on this exhibit), the exhibit will bring visitors through the vessel's history starting with her construction in 1911 in Boothbay Harbor, Maine right up to the present day. The exhibit will include artifacts, pictures, newspaper articles and a film documentary that will tell the viewer first hand about the ship, her captains, passengers and voyages.

Beautiful mosaics will be on view at the main galleries of the Highfield Hall this summer, in this show by the National Mosaic Exhibition. Featuring mosaic artists from across the United States and Canada, this juried show will feature a wide-range of artistic interpretations in tile and stone. A Mini Salon Sale will feature tiles from all of the artists for a flat rate of $150. Workshops and programs are also being scheduled. Visit the website for updates.
