Best Ice Cream On The Cape

There are few things better than summer on Cape Cod, and one of them is having ice cream during the summer on Cape Cod. Our quest for the smoothest, creamiest, yummiest ice cream and frozen treats has led us to these great spots. - By Hayley David

Hours: Fri - Sat 12 p.m. - 9 p.m.

A family favorite since it opened in 2009, Sweet Caroline's frozen treats are made from only the best ingredients—from the freshest toppings and homemade whipped cream to the freshly baked waffle cones. And the gorgeous location only adds to this shop's appeal. They have everyone's favorite flavors (Mint Chocolate Chip, Pistachio and Cookie Dough), but their specialties (sundaes, frappes and homemade ice cream sandwiches) are also worth a try. Don't forget to ask about their specials, too. The Lime Fusion (tart key lime pie hand-blended with vanilla soft-serve and topped with whipped cream and a cherry) is the perfect summertime treat.

Hours: Mon-Sun 12 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

One of the creamiest, most flavorful ice cream stands on the Cape (and possibly, the whole of Mass.?), this shop serves up gourmet ice cream and gelato in fun, adorably named flavors. Some to try? You'll go bananas for Barnsatble Bananas Foster, the Nauset Peach is light yet creamy, and the Chappaquiddick Chocolate Chip is delectably filled with chunky chocolate chips. Just the way we like it. And if you can't decide on a flavor, why not try a sampler of six flavors? If you'd like to make a meal out of ice cream, this is the place to do it.

The oldest ice cream shop on the Cape, we'd be remiss not to include Four Seas, which offers 24 delicious flavors to Cape Codders and tourists alike. Indecisive eaters, beware: you'll have a hard time choosing just one flavor. Although you can't go wrong with the strawberry, peppermint stick and peanut butter chocolate, the cantaloupe flavor is refreshing and satisfying, and the sorbets (especially the raspberry) are equally divine. If you want to take a special treat home, the ice cream cake will not disappoint.

Call for hours

Now this is one school we won't mind getting up early for. Practically a Cape Cod landmark, the line of Sundae Schoolers waiting for their luscious scoops of ice cream can get pretty crazy, but the wait will be worth it. Choose from more than 30 flavors, including the classic Oreo Crunch, Black Raspberry, or the perfect "breakfast" ice cream—Grapenut (vanilla ice cream with Grapenut cereal). There's also delicious frozen drinks, such as frappes, floats, and your choice of mini or giant banana split. We might just go with the giant. Delish.

The Smuggler, located within walking distance of the Cape Museum of Arts, has been a favorite with locals for many years. We love their frozen yogurt (96% fat-free!) flavors, like Chocolate Almond and Coffee Oreo, but their regular flavors, such as Apple Pie (spiced apples and cinnamon) and French Raspberry Truffle (French vanilla ice cream with a raspberry swirl and chocolate covered raspberry truffles) are finger-licking good, as well. For special occasions, get an ice cream cake. But hurry, they sell out pretty quickly.
