Best Fall Parent-Child Activities Near Boston

Parent-child activities can include fun, athletic and educational choices offering the opportunity to actively participate or be a spectator. Some activities are indoors, and others can be outdoors in the fresh New England air. There are shows, athletic competitions and so much more from which to choose a parent-child day of fun.

Edaville Railroad is home to this popular and endless display of carved pumpkins, which are scattered throughout the park. This is a very kid-friendly activity located about 50 minutes south of the city. There are three adventures, including Thomas Land, to explore and 90 rides and attractions to enjoy. Kids are encouraged to visit Pumpkins Aglow in their Halloween costumes, even though it opens on October 1st. There is also a hay bale maze to traverse and hot apple cider and donuts to chow down on.

The Head Of The Charles Regatta is an annual, world-renowned rowing race on the Charles River. Spectators, including parent-child groups, can enjoy the spectacular event from many vantage points. The liveliest spot from which to watch the Regatta is the Weld Exhibition, which is located near Harvard University's Weld Boathouse in Cambridge, the halfway point of the race. This is the official site for Regatta sponsors, some great local food and food samplings as well as official Regatta merchandise. A picnic on the banks of the Charles River while watching the Regatta is a perfect outing for a parent-child day trip.

The animal kingdom arrives on stage with Jack Hanna, the most famous animal expert in the country, in the Lynn Memorial Auditorium. Hanna takes the audience, parents and children, on a journey around the world as he recounts his incredible adventures with animals during his spectacular 50-year career. Live animals will grace the stage with Hanna at this venue, which is about 10 miles north of the city.

Octonauts And The Deep Sea Volcano Adventure Live! is a fun, active show featuring a crew of underwater explorers, including Captain Barnacles, Lieutenant Kwazii and Medic Peso. The crew sings fan-favorite songs and will add in a few new tunes during this exciting live show at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Boston. This is an interactive show and fun for children of all ages and their parents.

The exciting annual Chain Reaction at MIT Museum will take on the theme of symmetry this year. Participants create unique contraptions, and the spectators enjoy the thrill of watching the creations all come together in a huge chain reaction. Prior to the giant chain reaction, there is about 2 1/2 hours of family-friendly, hands-on design and engineering activities for the parent-child groups. Participating teams will also explain their contraptions to artist, inventor and renowned chain reaction creator, Arthur Ganson, and the eager audience. The participants will link their individual chain reaction devices together to create one mega chain reaction at the end of the competition.
