"The Scarlet Letter" is a surprisingly accurate view of both Puritan Boston and the beliefs of Puritan Boston. Obviously, it is a work of fiction and there is a touch of the supernatural betwixt the pages, but Puritan Boston was much as described. It was published in 1850 and is set in the 17th century, just a few years after Boston was founded. This novel is one of the most celebrated in American history and not a long read, so every reader interested in Boston history should try this story of adultery and betrayal.

"Johnny Tremain" is an iconic children's novel based during the American Revolution. It centers on the eponymous character, who works as a smith's apprentice as he becomes involved with the Sons of Liberty and the revolution itself. While the novel is a fictional work, it gives children a great doorway into the most famous figures in Boston at the time, what was happening for everyday people in the town and just how the war began. There is a reason it is often part of the curriculum when it comes time to teach the Revolutionary War to children.

Among the stolen pieces were irreplaceable works by Degas, Rembrandt and Vermeer, including the only seascape by Rembrandt. To date, the thieves have gone unpunished and the art still missing. This book is the true story of the heist, what was taken and just how the criminals were able to pull it off so successfully. True crime and Boston history buffs will love this tale.
