Keller @ Large: Trump And Sanders Have To Do Better Than This
BOSTON (CBS) - The outcome of the Wisconsin primary Tuesday night sure was interesting.
But the big wins for Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders weren't the most telling political events of the day.
Those were the news that Donald Trump will be giving a series of formal speeches on policy issues, something he's generally avoided doing; and the interview Bernie Sanders gave to the New York Daily News, in which he struggled to answer basic policy questions.
Why does all that matter?
Because as much as some voters want to use the presidential election as a megaphone for their anger, and as much as those on the right and left see the campaign as a vehicle for promoting their agenda, there is a moderate strain of voter that places greater value on electing a competent person with a certain level of seriousness about the job.
Trump has proven to be a very clever self-marketer with a keen eye for hot-button issues, and that brought him a long way. But it's been obvious for awhile now that to grow his support further, he needed to study up and show some depth, and a touch of compassion wouldn't hurt either.
We're still waiting.
Sanders has also been an effective mouthpiece for frustration with capitalism's failures, but he, too, has failed to broaden and deepen his message.
A presidential race is a massive, grueling national job interview.
If Trump and Sanders really want the job, they'll have to do better than this.
