Competency Evaluation Ordered For Man Charged In Rehoboth Standoff
REHOBOTH (CBS) — A man who held police at bay for nearly five hours outside a gas station in Rehoboth was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation Friday.
Benjamin Kimball, 38, appeared briefly in Taunton District Court in a wheelchair with cuts above and below his left eye a day after police say he claimed to have a gun and allegedly threatened to blow up the pumps at the Cumberland Farms on Route 44.
The standoff ended when he was taken down by a police dog. No gun or explosives were found. Kimball's "gun" turned out to be an Xbox controller.
Kimball's court-appointed attorney requested a competency evaluation before moving forward with the case Friday and the judge agreed to have a doctor meet with him.
