Benintendi: Sprained Knee Feels 'Stiff', Team Planning MRI For Thursday

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox lost Wednesday night's game to the Tampa Bay Rays in 11 innings, but the loss of left fielder Andrew Benintendi stung even more.

Caught in a rundown while attempting to get back to second base, Benintendi landed on his left leg awkwardly and appeared to suffer a serious injury. He had to be helped off the field and was replaced by Chris Young. The initial report is a sprained knee, but he said he also rolled his ankle on the play.

Despite the baserunning error, the only concern with Benintendi now is his health. He will be re-evaluated Thursday as the team hopes to schedule an MRI before Thursday's series finale.

"Right now, it just feels stiff. ... We're just going to come back tomorrow and see how it feels," Benintendi told reporters after the game.

Manager John Farrell said the team hopes to know more about the extent of the injury before Thursday's game and expressed how unfortunate it was to see a young, exciting player suffer such an ugly-looking injury at a crucial time of the season.

"You never like to see a player come off the field," said Farrell. "He has grabbed the attention, the support, he has been embraced by the rest of this club."

Based on Benintendi and Farrell's reactions, the injury may not be quite as serious as it initially looked. Benintendi is batting .324 with a homer and 10 RBI since debuting in the major leagues in August.
