Bedard: Roger Goodell Must Go
BOSTON (CBS) - Greg Bedard of TheMMQB.com has come to a conclusion as it relates to Roger Goodell and his job status in the National Football League.
"I think he should be out," Bedard told 98.5 The Sports Hub's Felger & Massarotti Tuesday afternoon. "I think the owners should look at this opportunity, look beyond their pocketbooks, their wallets, and say, 'You know what? The best thing for this league, the best thing for everybody -- us, the players, the fans, and everybody else responsible for how popular the league is -- we need to appoint an independent commissioner for the National Football League.'"
Bedard did not feel this strongly about Goodell during last week's appearance on the show. The final straw came after watching Goodell's press conference on Friday discussing the Ray Rice scandal and alleged cover up.
"[That press conference] set me off. The guy doesn't understand what the word transparency means. At all. He gets up there and says we want to be transparent. Well what did Ray Rice tell you that made it seem like it was ambiguous? 'We can't say because it's under appeal.' Are you kidding me? It's a point of fact. It was part of the reason that you made that [two game suspension] decision. Tell us. What about the AP report and the video making it to your office? 'Well the investigation will reveal that.' What changes are you going to make to the personal conduct policy? 'We're gonna form a committee in the next five months to determine that.' It's consistent crap from him, and I'm tired of it. This league is better than this. The owners in this league are better than this. To put that guy up there is a joke."
Bedard then called Goodell "unfit for office" based on the constitutional bylaws of the NFL under article 8, where it states, "the league must select [a commissioner] of unquestioned integrity to serve as commissioner."
"He has no integrity," adds Bedard. "He needs to go."
