Bed Bugs Force NH Camp To Cancel Remainder Of Season

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire summer camp has canceled the remainder of the season because of the discovery of bed bugs.

Staffers at Camp Spaulding in Penacook last week found the bugs in two of the boys' cabins. They moved the boys to other cabins and treated the affected areas with the help of an exterminator.

Upon further consultation and the Concord Health Department, camp managers decided the camp should undergo extensive treatment, which could take several months and include replacing all bed frames, sealing the floors and walls, steam cleaning all surfaces, and installing new mattresses.

The camp is offered by the Child and Family Services agency.

Scientists believe bed bugs have made a comeback due to the evolution of insecticide-resistant genes, and international travel.
