Beckett Ready To Show On-Field Adjustments

BOSTON (CBS) - Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett is ready to show off his on-field adjustments when he gets the start against the Cleveland Indians Tuesday evening.

What those adjustments are, you will have to figure out for yourself.

"Those are secret adjustments," Beckett told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Jonny Miller. "I can't tell anyone about them."

"They got more and more comfortable because it's not just the start," Beckett said of the adjustments. "It's hard to make the adjustments and not revert back to something else during the game. That's when you know they are starting to feel comfortable when they're the most natural thing that you go to."

"I was really excited about the last two starts," Beckett said of his final spring outings. "Just the way things started to feel, some of the adjustments we made early the spring. I felt like I took those adjustments into the games immediately but they don't show up right away. My last two starts I feel like they started clicking."

Beckett is looking to bounce back from a 6-6 injury-plagued 2010 campaign. The 30-year-old was never able to get on track, making a career-low 21 starts. To make sure he stays off the DL this season, or as much as possible, the righty focused more on core stability during the off-season, and is already feeling the effects.

"I think a lot of the things we did this off-season with the core stability stuff, I'm really noticing the differences now with having the everyday thing," Beckett said. "During the off-season you feel stronger but its not like you're doing baseball activities every day."

Another adjustment Beckett faces is dropping in the rotation. Manager Terry Francona pegged his former ace as the Sox number-four starter to start the 2011 season.

"It is what it is," Beckett said. "I have to go out there and pitch my day one way or the other, whatever day it is."

"I just want to put my team in a good position to win."

Beckett has the chance to play stopper for a Red Sox team that has dropped three straight to start the season. He will try and lead the much-hyped team to their first win after a stunning sweep in Texas.

"We didn't get off to a good start. We just need to play today's game and do what we're capable of doing," Beckett said.
