Baltimore Coach Brooks Has Ties To New Bedford
NEW BEDFORD (CBS) - In 1969, Clarence Brooks was a star football player at New Bedford High School.
Described as a gentleman and very popular, Brooks is now seen by many Patriots fans as the enemy. Brooks is the defensive line coach for the Baltimore Ravens.
This Sunday, his team will try to knock Tom Brady on his back in Foxboro.
One of his former teachers says Brooks was a big man on campus.
"Let me tell you something about Clarence," said Henry Saltzman, a teacher at New Bedford High in 1969, "he was one of the toughest S.O.B.'s I've ever seen, but a complete gentleman."
Saltzman says in high school, Brooks was tough as nails, but didn't need to flaunt it.
"There are some kids, who are very popular, and take advantage of it," he said. "They can be mean, too. Not Clarence, he was just a nice kid."
When asked if he'll be cheering even a little for Brooks, Saltzman admitted he was not.
"There's nothing Brooks can do. I wish him well," said Saltzman. "And if there's anyone I'd invite to dinner, it's Clarence. But Sunday will be his last day of coaching this year!"
