Bail set at $5,000 in Lowell fatal
A Lowell man pleaded not guilty Monday to drunken driving and other charges in a crash that killed an off-duty police officer.
26-year old Theary Chan was arraigned in Lowell District Court in the crash that killed Sergeant Patrick Johnson.
Bail for Chan was set at $5,000 cash.
Police say early Saturday morning, while off-duty, Johnson was riding his motorcycle through the intersection of Princeton Blvd. and Foster Street when he was hit by a car driven by Theary Chan.
Johnson was pronounced dead at Lowell General Hospital. Chan was arrested later at the same hospital, where he was being treated for injuries from the crash.
Prosecutors said Johnson was thrown about three houses from where he was hit, landing on the lawn of one house.
Chan alleges that he stopped at the intersection, his defense attorney said.
