Backyard Ice Rinks Gaining Popularity
WALPOLE (CBS) -- It's winter, it's New England, it's a tradition. Backyard skating rinks have popped up all over the region, and instead of staying inside playing video games, kids are out enjoying the season.
"It's really fun and an opportunity you don't get to do everyday," said Jessica O'Reilly of Walpole.
WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports.
Lars McKim of Best Rink, which builds backyard rinks, says he's seen a 55 percent increase in the number of outdoor rinks in the area.
But those rinks aren't easy to maintain.
The snow has to be cleared and the surface has to be treated.
Still, those who are out on the ice say every bit of work is worth it.
"A few bumps and bruises, but no broken bones and everyone has all their teeth," said John Morris of Walpole.
