Attorney Says Whitey Bulger A 'Gracious Client'
BOSTON (CBS) – One of Whitey Bulger's attorneys said he considers Bulger a "gracious client" after representing him at his federal trial.
When people ask Hank Brennan how he could defend a killer like Bulger, he told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Joe Mathieu he doesn't prejudge clients.
"We treat them like a family member, just like we would want to be treated if we needed help," Brennan said Tuesday.
"James Bulger was a gracious client. He was an excellent client and like every other client I've ever defended, I treat them like a family member when they're under my umbrella and it's my job to protect them."
When asked if he believed Bulger is a murderer, Brennan pointed a finger at the federal government.
"I believe Whitey Bulger operated as an organized crime figure in Boston for decades with immunity and the Department of Justice knew exactly what was going on in Boston and did nothing about it," he said.
Brennan said Bulger had every intention of testifying and will appeal the verdicts.
"He was prevented from providing a defense. Any citizen who is accused of a crime by the federal government should be able to testify on their own behalf," Brennan said.
"I don't think that's the last word from Jim Bulger. The story still needs to be told. The victims and the public needs to hear it."
