South Boston Stabbing Suspect Had 17 Prior Arrests
BOSTON (CBS) - A judge ordered a mental health evaluation for a man accused of stabbing a woman in South Boston early Wednesday morning and punching another woman early Tuesday morning.
Edwin Alemany, 28, was supposed to be arraigned on Thursday in South Boston District Court on a charge of armed assault with intent to murder.
Police allege that Alemany stabbed a woman on Gates Street just after midnight Wednesday morning.
Alemany's lawyer argued that he is suicidal and not fit to stand trial. A judge agreed to postpone the arraignment until August 14. Alemany will be sent to Bridgewater Hospital for a 20-day evaluation.
The Wednesday morning stabbing was one of three attacks in the same neighborhood within a 24-hour span.
One of those attacks was the kidnapping and murder of Amy Lord, whose body was later found in Hyde Park.
Boston police have said that Alemany has not been ruled out as a suspect in that murder. However, they also noted they were not ready to say whether they thought the attacks might be connected.
Alemany has a lengthy criminal record, and has been arrested 17 times by Boston police dating back to when he was 14 years old. His first arrest was armed for breaking and entering and destruction of personal property at a Roslindale home in 1999.
That record includes a number of violent offenses including a stabbing conviction from 2003.
In 2010, he was accused of kicking staff members at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
