Attorney: Edwin Alemany Tried To Kill Himself In Jail
Twenty-eight-year-old Edwin Alemany was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty at his arraignment in West Roxbury District Court Thursday morning in Lord's murder.
But his attorney Jeffrey Denner told the court Alemany attempted suicide in the Nashua Street Jail and ended up with self-inflicted scratches on his arms and neck.
Prosecutors say Alemany kidnapped Lord, 24, in South Boston and forced her to withdraw cash from five ATMs in less than an hour before killing her on July 23. Lord's body was found at Stony Brook reservation that afternoon.
Alemany then started spending the money, telling friends he won it playing the lottery.
Investigators recovered video surveillance images from the ATMs, which show Lord in the company of another person whom prosecutors say was Alemany. Hours later, however, Alemany was seen alone in her vehicle.
Prosecutors say video surveillance imagery also shows what investigators believe to be Lord's abduction from her building just before 5:40 that morning, and additional surveillance also depicts Alemany spending a large amount of money at a store in South Boston after they believe Lord was slain.
Lord was a former high school cheerleader from Wilbraham who attended Bentley University and moved to South Boston when she landed a job at a digital media company.
Alemany was ordered held on $3 million bail Wednesday after pleading not guilty in two unrelated assaults on other women July 23 and 24.
Police also believe Alemany attacked another woman in Boston last September. She managed to get away and ended up with Alemany's ID after the assault. The woman who was attacked released a statement Thursday saying, "I am so relieved that Edwin Alemany was caught and was arraigned for the murder of Amy Lord. My heart goes out to Amy's family. I have no further comment at this time." A Boston Police officer was demoted for not investigating that case properly.
Denner said Alemany has a history of serious mental health problems.
A psychiatrist will evaluate Alemany and he will be held at Bridgewater State Hospital for now.
