ASPCA Gives $50K Grant To N.H. Shelter To Care For Wolf-Dogs
CHATHAM, N.H. (CBS/AP) — The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is giving a $50,000 grant to a New Hampshire shelter to help with 25 wolf-dogs rescued last month from a property in Bristol.
The money will allow the California-based Lockwood Animal Rescue Center to care for other wolf-dogs rescued from across the eastern United States at a newly established facility, the New England Wolf Advocacy and Rescue Center in Chatham.
The Chatham center was opened in August after it acquired a 70-acre property and began building habitats for wolf-dogs rescued in cruelty cases.
The animals that are being treated will undergo neuter surgery, vaccinations and antibiotic regimens until they are well enough to live in their outdoor habitats funded by the ASPCA.
Wolf-dogs are canines bred from gray wolves and domestic dogs, according to the California Department of Fish and Game. To maintain a wolf-like appearance for the exotic pet owner market, breeders often pick Siberian huskies and Alaskan malamutes to reproduce with gray wolves.
"Wolf-dogs are not adoptable to the general public and are euthanized by most state agencies upon seizure," said Matthew Simmons, co-founder of both centers.
As part of its "Warriors and Wolves" program, Lockwood has employed veterans, many with post-traumatic stress disorder or other trauma-related maladies, to provide daily care for the animals.
