As The Heavy Rains Ease...A Look Towards Sunday
What an afternoon and evening! Seriously, you have to love this! Granted, driving in the rain is no fun. Having sporting events or wedding plans poured on is no fun either. But from a pure weather lovers perspective...today is just what the doctor ordered! A good soaking rain for the entire region. After such a dry July, this is exactly what the gardens, lawns and trees needed.
Flash Flooding occurred this afternoon in Heavy torrential downpours where 4.6" of rain fell in a mater of 2-3" hours in East Longmeadow. Cars were becoming stranded in the rapidly rising water...from Northampton to Holyoke to Windsor Locks. Rainfall rates of 1-2"/hour were common in storms crawling eastward allowing water to pile up quickly and inundate urban areas with poor runoff/drainage.
Our wave of low pressure along a stalled front south of New England is slowly pulling off the coast. The heaviest rain is shifting east and will be pulling off the coast after midnight. Showers will still linger through the overnight as another batch in N. New Jersey will skirt through CT & RI over night. Sunday morning will start off damp with the low off the coast of Nantucket with low clouds and drizzle. Light NE will promise a cloudy cooler day at the coast with temps in the upper 60's and Lwr 70's. Early showers will be diminishing, but a cool pool of air aloft will slide in behind the departing low.
Low Clouds will hold tough Sunday..but will try to break by the midday , but this will likely destabilize the atmosphere again allowing for a few more scattered showers, thunderstorms to develop. The best chance of any diurnal showers will likely be inland towards western and central New England away from the coast where highs will be in the mid 70's. Drier air will start to follow in behind the departing low for a bit more stable weather to start off next week for a brief time. More fun and games await!
