As Storm Hits Northeast, Super Bowl Ticket Prices Start To Drop On Secondary Market

With the arctic blast of winter storm Juno affecting the Northeast, Patriots fans hoping to indulge in the Super Bowl festivities in Phoenix this week have been grounded by the snow. It’s clear and 75 degrees for Super Bowl Media Day in Glendale on Tuesday, but the Nor’easter hitting New England has allowed Super Bowl tickets on the secondary market to begin declining in price.
It’s not uncommon to see secondary ticket prices fall as the game gets closer. Prices often begin to drop soon after the Championship Games have concluded and the Super Bowl teams are set, but this year has taken a different pattern. After reaching the most expensive average in at least the last six years several days ago, Super Bowl tickets on TiqIQ have now begun to dive just five days before the big game.
For many, waiting until the eleventh hour to purchase tickets may elicit the best deals, but prices still remain relatively high on the secondary market. The average price for Super Bowl tickets is now $5,738.62, marking a drop of 5.9% from yesterday’s average of $6,103.07. The game’s cheapest seat is currently listed at $3,155. Though playing the waiting game may give fans the best chance at scooping up a cheaper ticket, hotel and travel accommodations in the Phoenix area will be harder to come by with each passing day.
Unlike Super Bowl ticket prices, airfare has been gradually increasing in price as the game gets closer. According to Priceline.com, two weeks ago a roundtrip ticket from Boston Logan Airport to Phoenix Sky Harbor was listed for as low as $343. Last week, that price jumped between $704-$1,227. With delays abundant and many grounded in New England today, add frustration to the cheapest roundtrip flight and it’ll cost anywhere between $867-$1,491.
As far as hotel accommodations, the range for a room per night is now listed at $145-$825, which is noticeably cheaper than the $1,999 asking price some hotels were asking just last week. If willing to drive from a further area outside of Phoenix like Tuscon, 4-star hotels are abound. Some start for as little as $155 per night and the most expensive 4-star hotel available is $379.
Of course, Patriots fans will find that getting to Phoenix is half the battle. With the snow still falling and nearly two feet of snow impacting New England, flight delays and aggravation has invaded Boston Logan Airport. It will be interesting to track Juno’s ultimate effect on Super Bowl ticket prices, and it seems like the storm has already started to make prices fall on the secondary market.
