Arrest Made In Orange Line Assault

BOSTON (CBS) -- MBTA police have arrested the man who they say assaulted two young women on the Orange Line last month.

Joseph Balistreri, 36, of Somerville, is charged with assault and battery, making threats, and accosting the women.

Authorities say Balistreri approached two women, ages 18 and 19, on November 19 on a trolley and used homophobic and racial slurs, kicked them, and spit on them before taking off.

Balistreri was arrested at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at his home in Somerville. Authorities say they received many tips after the story of the assault and the suspect's picture was widely publicized.

Balistreri is being held on $7,500 cash bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Charlestown District Court.
