Arctic Air Retreats This Week

Cold high pressure sits over this morning with clear skies and frigid early morning temperatures Below zero in the northern valleys, single digits in the suburbs, and teens and 20's at the coast. Ocean effect clouds remain in place across SE MA. High pressure sits over us today providing calm conditions, but as it pulls off shore this afternoon, light east winds at the surface may begin to direct some of this low cloudiness in land.  These low clouds may deposit a few flurries in spots this afternoon. So I expect sunshine to hold for the tailgaitors, but clouds will be increasing this afternoon just in time for kickoff with high temps near 30. Fresh new snow on the ground will help to refrigerate the cold air to help keep temps mainly below 32...excluding the south coast & Cape. Just an awesome ski day with Bluebird skies and PP/PDR and wide open terrain.

Speaking of the south coast and Cape...Wow! Intense banding yesterday afternoon dropped a foot of snow in many communities from Buzzards Bay to Cape Cod. Roads are still a bit slippery out there so please use caution when driving on these side roads and bends. Here are the snow totals from Saturday's snowfall

Clouds will continue to thicken tonight with light SE winds. Light spotty precipitation and fog may try to form around dawn. Temps will hold steady overnight in the 20's, but be cold enough down at the ground that we could see pockets of freezing drizzle in time for the AM commute in western MA, SW NH, Worcester hills. The rest of us will see and overcast/fog Monday with light SSE winds gradually warming temps into the 40's by afternoon. Cold air will hold on longer across the north keeping temps in the 30's. Showers may bein to push into western New Engl;and by the end of the day.

A cold front will sweep through Monday night with a slug of rain and wind. Winds from the south could briefly gust to 40 mph. It will be a mild overnight with lows holding in the 30's and 40's. The front will push off the coast at dawn Tuesday with clearing skies and a mild WSW wind on the back side. Temps will remain mild Tuesday in the 40's and Lwr 50's before another front pushes through Tuesday night with building high pressure for the midweek, returning a cooler flow from the NW and temps in the Lwr 40's with plenty of sun from Wednesday into Thursday.
