Anna Burns Welker, Wes' Wife, Apologizes For Bashing Ray Lewis On Facebook
BOSTON (CBS) -- Anyone who's ever applied for a job in the past 10 years knows that it's important to be careful what they say on social media, because it can make them look bad. The same applies for wives of famous football players.
Anna Burns Welker, wife of Wes Welker, was understandably upset after Welker and the Patriots lost 28-13 in Sunday night's AFC Championship Game. She took out those frustrations in a Facebook post.
"Proud of my husband and the Pats," Welker wrote on her Facebook page in a post that has since been deleted. "By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis' Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. Yay. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!"
Burns Welker was referencing Lewis' involvement in a post-Super Bowl fight in Atlanta in January 2000, which resulted in the murder of two men. Murder charges against Lewis were dropped when he agreed to testify against the other defendants in exchange for a lesser charge. Lewis pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice for misleading police while being questioned in the hours after the murders.
Burns Welker apologized for her comments late on Monday in a statement to Larry Brown Sports.
"I'm deeply sorry for my recent post on Facebook," Burns told the site. "I let the competitiveness of the game and the comments people were making about a team I dearly love get the best of me. My actions were emotional and irrational and I sincerely apologize to Ray Lewis and anyone affected by my comment after yesterday's game. It is such an accomplishment for any team to make it to the NFL playoffs, and the momentary frustration I felt should not overshadow the accomplishments of both of these amazing teams."
