Allen On Garnett Snub: 'That's Just KG'
BOSTON (CBS) - As Ray Allen checked in for the first time as a member of the Miami Heat, he walked over to the Celtics bench and hugged his former head coach Doc Rivers.
He then proceeded to shake hands with all of the assistant coaches until he got to Kevin Garnett, who may be the most bitter of all his former teammates about Allen's departure to the rival Heat.
Garnett was catching a breather on the bench, so Allen gave him a quick pat on the shoulder. Garnett, who said he didn't have Allen's phone number anymore on Celtics Media Day, then gave new meaning to "cold shoulder."
Garnett did not respond to Allen's gesture - which Allen referred to as a "peace-offering."
But the sharp-shooter understood.
"That's just KG," he told TNT's Craig Sager on the court following Miami's 120-107 win. "He probably didn't see me coming. Those guys, I love those guys. I can't say enough good things about them. I love New England. It will always be my home and will always be a special place for me and my family."
Garnett said he was just trying to remain neutral during the game.
"You know what man, I was just trying to stay as neutral as I could but obviously I'm an intense person," he told reporters, according to the Boston Globe. "Other than it was blank, I just saw the Heat uniforms and obviously he's on the other side and I just tried to play the game, man."
Allen did get the last laugh on his former team, scoring 19-points off the bench on 5-for-7 shooting. He started his Heat career by draining a corner three as the shot clock expired, and had no problems contributing to his new team's win over his former team.
Allen will make his first visits the TD Garden as a member of the Heat in a Sunday afternoon game on January 27. We'll see if KG's cold shoulder warms up a bit to his former teammate by then.
