All Things Travel: Two New Ways To Get To Logan Airport

BOSTON (CBS) – There are now two new transportation options to get to Logan Airport, and one of them may be free for riders.

This week, Massport rolled out the Back Bay Logan Express and the national brand Super Shuttle is now operating in Greater Boston providing door-to-door service within Rte. 128.

The new Express buses will leave from the Hynes Convention Center and the MBTA bus stop in Copley Square starting at 5:00 am with the last return trip scheduled to leave the airport at 10:00 p.m. Buses will run every 20 minutes.

There will be $5 charge with a credit or debit card, but no cash. Riders with a MBTA monthly pass will ride free.

Massport expects the new bus service to carry over 1,000 passengers a day by the end of the year.

The four Logan Express bus services from Braintree, Framingham, Peabody and Woburn carried over 1.2 million passengers last year.

40 percent of Logan's passengers chose a high occupancy vehicle, transit or taxi to get to and from the airport, ranking Boston first among U.S. airports for HOV use.

In 2005, Massport purchased eight clean-fuel Silver buses for the MBTA and began offering free service on the Silver Line from Logan downtown to South Station.

The new Back Bay service should be especially popular with people attending events at the Hynes Convention Center and staying at nearby hotels.

Massport is considering this new service as a two year test while the Government Center T station is closed for a modernization project and the direct connection from the Green Line to The Blue Line is not available.

The Super Shuttle is a national door-to-door van service that is available now at over 40 airports. Super Shuttle currently operates over 20 vans in Greater Boston. Their rates from the Back Bay to Logan Airport are $18 per person.

In the next two months, Logan Airport will welcome Turkish Airlines and Hainan Airlines with direct service to Beijing, China. That new service will bring the total non-stop international destinations from the Boston airport to 36 and the domestic destinations to 76 non-stop flights.
