All Things Travel: Cape Air CEO Dan Wolf
BOSTON (CBS) - I have known Dan Wolf, the CEO of Cape Air for over a dozen years and happen to think he would be a good governor. I also happen to think that this matter of whether the state ethics law applies to Wolf should have been settled long before he was elected a State Senator.
He has built the regional airline into a strong carrier serving the Cape and Islands, Maine and New Hampshire and flies his aircraft himself on a regular basis. How many other regional airline chairmen are also pilots?
Wolf and his staff have added routes in San Juan, Puerto Rico that were dropped by American Eagle and have even gone so far as to fly routes from Guam in the Pacific Ocean.
On more than one occasion, he has told me that his company is looking to find a manufacturer of larger aircraft.
The last time I saw Wolf was on the inaugural test run of the Cape Flyer weekend train to Hyannis from Boston. What other airline executive would have welcomed a competitor into his home town, even though he questioned the name of the train with a smile.
Four years ago I had the pleasure of attending the airline's 20th Anniversary of the airline in Provincetown and the enthusiasm of his employees for the company was evident. In 24 years, Cape Air has created a thousand jobs.
Cape Air operates out of Terminal C at Logan Airport. Wolf was one of the first airlines to make a marketing alliance with JetBlue at Logan. People flying to the islands from a trip to the Caribbean can check their bags right through to their final destination.
The airline adds summer service to the islands from T.F. Green Airport in Providence.
It is certain that Wolf knows as much about tourism and its impact on the Massachusetts economy as anyone in the State Senate.
It seems to me that Wolf could create some sort of blind trust for his financial situation, make sure that he will not take a stance on matters having to do with Massachusetts' airports and move on. We need more good men and women in government.
