All Things Travel: Logan, South Station Ready For Busiest Days Of Year
BOSTON (CBS) - The city's transportation hubs at Logan Airport and South Station will experience their busiest days of the year this week.
According to Massport, about 100,000 passengers will pass through Logan's terminals Thursday and about 95,000 Friday. The average is 79,000.
When you add in travelers using the rail and bus hub at South Station, the total number increases to more than 380,000 for the two-day period. To put that in prospective, it's the equivalent of filling Fenway Park to capacity for 10 games.
Meanwhile, Massport held its first press conference ever on the Silver Line platform at South Station Wednesday. It indicates the closer relationship that is taking place between Massport and the MBTA.
On hand were Beverly Scott, the new general manager of the MBTA, Massport CEO Thomas Glynn and Aviation Director Ed Freni.
Massport announced that the free Silver Line bus service from the airport to South Station connecting directly to the MBTA Red Line would be continued after January 6.
The Massport board will vote on a year-long extension at their next monthly meeting on January 17.
Massport has contributed more than $1 million to run the service this year.
The agency has also installed a new flight information departure board on the Silver Line platform at South Station, giving departing passengers the same up-to-date data as they receive at the airport.
"Bringing it all together taking advantage of real-time information is cost-effective and efficient," said Scott.
Freni said Massport would be monitoring Silver Line load factors closely and that the MBTA would add extra buses if needed.
Logan Airport expects to handle more than 29 million passengers as the year ends.
With bad weather conditions in the mid-west, travelers were advised to monitor massport.com for the latest arrival and departure information. Massport was advising passengers to arrive at Logan two hours before their flights during the holiday period.
