All Eyes On Monday Commute As Longfellow Bridge Project Begins
The detour signs are up, the streets are marked and all eyes are on Monday's commutes.
Monday morning's commute marks the first big test for drivers after the Longfellow Bridge Reconstruction Project got underway over the weekend.
The three-year project will revamp the bridge and bring it up to code.
While it's taking place, there will be just one lane of traffic open heading from Cambridge to Boston.
And there will be no lanes of traffic open from Boston to Cambridge, all of those drivers will be detoured.
Built in the early 1900's, the bridge is a vital link connecting Boston and Cambridge, carrying some 28,000 vehicles a day.
Pedestrian and bike traffic shouldn't be affected.
Red Line traffic will only be impacted on 25 separate weekends, on those days T-riders will be bussed around the construction.
