Affleck, Damon Partnering Up For New Whitey Bulger Movie
BOSTON (CBS) - Massachusetts natives Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are teaming up once again to recreate Whitey Bulger's life of crime on the big screen.
Bulger was arrested in June after 16 years on the run with his longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig. The former leader the "Winter Hill Gang" was wanted in connection with 19 murders, among other crimes.
"We're doing a Whitey Bulger movie," Damon told GQ Magazine. "Warner's got it for us."
WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports
Ben Affleck will co-star, direct and produce the film with Damon under their production company Pearl Street Films.
Damon will star as Bulger and Terence Winter, who worked with The Sopranos, will write the script. Casey Affleck will also star in the film.
According to Warner Brothers the story, "will cover Bulger's misspent youth leading to his incarceration on Alcatraz, through his rise to become the most powerful and calculating gangster in U.S. history while secretly serving as an FBI informant for decades."
"If it's a straight biopic, we'll do it over a period of time. But it's always a question of what part of the story do you tell, and biopics are always a little cumbersome," Damon told GQ. "So do we find another way in? We're still figuring it out."
