Adventurer Leaves Cape Cod On Final Leg Of Worldwide Journey

CHATHAM (CBS) – Sarah Outen is rowing from Cape Cod to England. She took off from Chatham Thursday morning and will row for more than 3,000 miles.

If her nerves were on edge, Sarah Outen wasn't showing it, even though for the next three to four months, a 21-foot hi-tech rowboat will be her home on the ocean.

"From Chatham I am going to try and head southeast that's the overall goal," Outen said. "The weather over the next few days might push me north a bit so don't lose faith in the first few days if you think 'where is she going.'"

In a little over four years, Sarah has traveled 22,000 miles around the world, using nothing but muscle power.

She biked across Asia and North America and rowed across the Pacific, where she nearly lost her life in a typhoon.

Thursday was the beginning of the final leg of her epic journey back home to England.

In four years, she has made friends around the world but spent countless hours in isolation.

"I think I'm really good at being alone," she says. "I've done a lot of that over the last few years so I'm confident in the ability to look after myself, keep happy up top and strong."

Many in Chatham gave her a sendoff to remember. There was one last hug for her fiancée, Lucy, and then she took off to face the Atlantic, with nothing more than her muscles and her heart.

Soon, Sarah will be nothing more than a speck on the ocean, but a speck with immeasurable courage.
