Elderly Man Crashes BMW Into Crowd At Framingham Auto Auction
FRAMINGHAM (CBS) – Eight people were injured after an elderly man crashed a BMW SUV inside a Framingham vehicle auction facility Friday.
Several ambulances were called to ADESA Boston on Western Ave. around 10 a.m. following a crash inside the large building.
Framingham Police said 78-year-old Herbert Sunshine, who is a contracted worker and not an ADESA employee, was driving on the concrete floor of the warehouse when the vehicle suddenly accelerated.
The SUV hit five parked vehicles and seven adults who were in the area. It then continued forward, hit a cinder block interior wall and knocked it over.
One person walking nearby suffered non life-threatening injuries. The injuries were serious enough that the patient was transported to Mass General Hospital by MedFlight helicopter.
Each of the other victims, including Sunshine's wife who was in the vehicle in front of him, were taken by ambulance to MetroWest Medical Center.
Sunshine was uninjured. It is unclear if he will be charged.
Larry Proulx was among eight people who were hit but not seriously injured.
"As I spun around to see what was going on I don't know if people hit me or a car hit me it all happened so fast," he told WBZ-TV's Beth Germano.
A witness inside the building took video of the aftermath, showing a chaotic scene.
The video shows the SUV lodged into the cement wall.
Bystanders can be seen working to free a man from the area of the SUV and carrying him to safety.
"There was an accident today at ADESA Boston. We are currently working closely with local authorities on this matter and providing our full cooperation," ADESA spokesman Darci Valentine said in a statement to WBZ-TV.
According to the company's website, ADESA provides car auctions for customers and dealers.
The building was previously a General Motors assembly plant.
"The driver just, I don't know what was happening. He lost control. We don't know why. He just, high speed, he hit the people, the wall, other cars," one witness told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Lana Jones.
"Just suddenly everyone was screaming."
