Adam Jones: Patriots-Jets Border War Heating Up
BOSTON (CBS) - It's always interesting when these two teams meet on the field, but often times it's even more interesting what happens between the Patriots and Jets off the field.
The New York-New England rivalry has tempered in recent years with Bill Belichick's Patriots more often than not getting the better of Rex Ryan's J-E-T-S, but the border war has really reached a boiling point in recent months.
- December 29, 2014: Jets owner Woody Johnson says he would love to have Darrelle Revis back in New York; Patriots subsequently file tampering charges.
- March 10, 2015: Darrelle Revis signs a five-year contract with the New York Jets.
- March 23, 2015: Patriots owner Robert Kraft says they made a competitive offer to retain Darrelle Revis; Jets subsequently file tampering charges.
These actions are all just the tip of the iceberg when viewing the wider scope of the rivalry, which includes Bill Parcells, Curtis Martin, Eric Mangini, Bill Belichick resigning as HC of the NYJ and many more instances.
"I like when the two organizations have this rivalry, which doesn't always extend to the field," said 98.5 The Sports Hub's Adam Jones Wednesday night. "I think it's healthy when you have a rival within the division that you really truly hate."
As far as the whole tampering situation goes, which is rampant and widespread across the NFL, Rich Keefe says they need to adjust the definition of the charge.
"There might not even be a seventh round one year because everybody would be guilty of tampering. You really need to fine tune what tampering is. There's such a gray area. It's not a clear-cut definition."
When all was said and done Darrelle Revis received $39 million fully guaranteed from the Jets, and numerous reports indicate New England's offer was just south of $30 million.
Darrelle Revis was on The Michael Kay Show Wednesday afternoon and spoke in direct contrast to Robert Kraft's "competitive offer" comment.
"We tried to work on a deal and we felt it wasn't in the ballpark of what we were looking for," Revis said on the New York City airwaves. "We moved on and they moved on too."
And with that remark, the New England tie is officially severed.
"[Revis] is jumping in with both feet on the New York Jets side of the rivalry. No more are we going to hear any verbal bouquets, or compliments thrown towards the Patriots," said Jones.
