Vandals Topple Headstones, Destroy Statues At Acushnet Cemetery

ACUSHNET (AP) — Police are looking for the vandals who knocked over a dozen tombstones at Acushnet Cemetery.

It happened sometime this week at the grave sites on Main Street. Police found 17 headstones pushed off graves at the western end of the cemetery.

Robert Rodriguez, cemetery superintendent, called the vandalism "heartbreaking" for family members who have loved ones buried there.

"The families have been through enough, you know, so if there's any cost or whatever, the cemetery would take care of it for them. It's just so upsetting and, you know, heartbreaking," he said.

Police said those responsible also smashed some decorations left at the graves.

Crews are working to put the headstones back in place.

On Facebook, police called the vandalism a "disgusting act."

Anyone with any information on the vandalism is asked to call police.
