Accused Drunk Driver Arraigned In Hospital Bed In Deadly Canton Crash
BOSTON (CBS) - The driver in a deadly weekend crash was arraigned on several charges Monday from his hospital bed at Boston Medical Center.
Sean Jackman, 24, of Stoughton, pleaded not guilty to charges of motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence, speeding and marked lanes violations.
Police say he was drunk while driving home from a wedding early Saturday morning when he hit a wall and a tree on Bolivar Road in Canton.
His passenger, 20-year-old Evan Bard of Agawam, was killed. She was a cheerleader and nursing student at Curry College.
"Keep the Bard family in your prayers. It was a hard weekend to lose such an amazing person, being Mother's Day and Evan's birthday was in, probably just about a week-and-a-half, two weeks," Bard's roommate Mary Conway of Danvers told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Monday.
Jackman suffered a head injury. He wore a neck brace and had several cuts on his face at the arraignment.
The judge ordered him held on $500,000 bail when he's released from the hospital.
Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Melissa Brooks is prosecuting the case to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, because Jackman had been an intern in the Norfolk District Attorney's Office and his uncle had worked there.
Jackman is due in court for his next hearing in the case June 10.
