Accused Drunk Driver Charged With Hitting Good Samaritan, Woman On Route 1
BOSTON (CBS) – A Chelsea man is charged with driving drunk and hitting two people, including a Good Samaritan, over the weekend.
Nicholas Schaeneman, 27, was arraigned Monday in Chelsea District Court.
State Police say he was driving drunk early Saturday morning when he crashed his Honda Civic into another Civic that had broken down on Route 1 south near Route 60 in Revere.
The driver of the Civic and a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help were standing near the disabled Civic when it was hit. The impact pushed the car into them.
The Good Samaritan, 39-year-old Amaury Ramirez from Roslindale, was seriously hurt. He was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Ramirez's family has been at his bedside for days waiting, praying for him to wake up. They say Amaury, who is a Honda delivery driver by day and an Uber driver at night, would help anybody.
"He would stop whenever he saw somebody on the road, he would stop and help whomever he found on the road," said Ines Ramirez, Amaury's sister. "My brother is a very caring person."
The Civic driver, a 20-year-old woman from Lynn, suffered face and head injuries was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday.
Schaeneman was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and a marked lanes violation.
He is being held on $13,000 cash bail.
