Abraham On Toucher & Rich: Would You Trade Middlebrooks For Peavy?
The Red Sox are a half a game ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, and are looking to hold on to that slim lead as the two teams make up a game Monday night at Fenway Park.
With the trade deadline coming up on Wednesday, the Red Sox are looking for help to stay ahead. Red Sox insider Peter Abraham joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich on Monday to discuss what the Sox should do before the approaching trade deadline.
"I think they should improve their bullpen, that's the biggest need right now," said Abraham. "They need to get someone in to take the pressure off of Tazawa and Uehara and these guys who have given them a lot of innings."
Abraham also had some ideas of what the team shouldn't do for some help down the stretch.
"What I don't think would be smart would be to start trading all of these prospects; the high-end guys that they've been so good at developing," said Abraham. "Because that's what got them in trouble in the first place last year, and that's what would get them in trouble down the road."
They discussed the possibility of trading Stephen Drew, but thought that the team wouldn't get much in return. Would the team consider trading third baseman Will Middlebrooks to get a player such as White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy.
"I think that would be giving up a lot for Jake Peavy," said Abraham. "Middlebrooks is still only 24-years-old. This is a guy who was a very good big leaguer last year and I think it's silly to write off a guy who's 24-years-old because he's had a bad year."

They also discussed David Ortiz smashing up a dugout phone box with a bat in Baltimore over the weekend. Will the Sox slugger be fined or possibly suspended due to this outburst?
