Abraham On Toucher & Rich: Red Sox Need Pitching
There has been rumors that the Red Sox and Kansas City Royals have talked about a trade involving Sox pitcher Jon Lester for Royals top prospect Wil Myers. Another report say that the Sox are interested in signing three free agents in Mike Napoli, Nick Swisher and Cody Ross.
With the hot stove heating up, The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich to discuss these off-season rumors with the MLB winter meetings approaching.
Abraham doesn't really care for the trade that would move Jon Lester, because pitching remains one of Boston's top need.
"They need pitching; I don't see how the Red Sox get better by trading one of their two best starting pitchers," said Abraham. "They need a starter already, so if you trade Lester now you're going to need two."
Abraham believes this kind of move wouldn't make the team better for the next season. It may pay off three or four year down the road, but he doesn't feel that the Sox are that kind of team.
But should the Red Sox be focused on next season, or is it time start the rebuilding process?
"If they were going to do that, then why sign 37-year-old David Ortiz for a couple years? You might as well let him go too because he's not part of the future," said Abraham.
Abraham thinks that if Boston is looking to trade Lester, they need to get more than just a corner outfield prospect in return. Plus, why would Kansas City want to trade away a top prospect like Myers?
The guys went on to discuss free agents and the possibility of the Sox signing Nick Swisher. The outfielder/first baseman is reportedly looking for a $100-million dollar contract and four years -- possibly even more -- but do the Sox want to spend that much on a player like him?
