Abraham On Toucher & Rich: Minor Trades Possible, But Red Sox Won't Go Full Sell Mode
BOSTON (CBS) - Don't look now but your Boston Red Sox have won six of their last seven games, including four straight overall dating back before the All Star Break.
Despite the recent surge in winning baseball, the team still sits at just 46-52 and remain 7.5 games back in the division and six games back from the second wild card.
The MLB trade deadline is 10 days away and the Red Sox are faced with a multitude of decisions, some minor and some major.
Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe came on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich show Monday morning to discuss said dilemma.
He doesn't think the current winning surge should affect the team's decision making, but he fears it will.
"I think they're probably going to trade guys off they can trade without really fundamentally changing the team, be it Jake Peavy, Jonny Gomes and maybe Mike Carp or somebody like that. But I don't see them going full-in and trading off John Lackey or Koji Uehara. I don't think they'll do that. I think they can make some minor moves that will open up even more space for some of the younger guys to play."
On Uehara, the team's most reliable closer and trusted relief pitcher, Abraham thinks the Red Sox need to have a serious discussion about trading the 39-year-old.
"They have to think really seriously about Uehara. Do they want to re-sign a guy who's going to be 40 in April, who's pitched a lot in the last year to be their closer going forward? Or do they trade him now at the peak of his value? I think the Red Sox could do a lot in these next two weeks to really improve their team in 2015, but I just don't know if they'll do that when they charge what they charge. It'll be the lesser of the two things. I think it'll just be minor moves."
Speaking to one of those lesser deals, Abraham thinks trading away Jake Peavy makes the most sense.
"They have Brandon Workman, Anthony Ranaudo and all these other young kids ready to come up from Pawtucket -- you could almost make the case that trading Jake Peavy would make the Red Sox better because they'd be putting a guy in there with better numbers in the case of Workman. It would make sense to give the younger guys the chance and it really wouldn't hurt the team."
