Abraham On Toucher & Rich: 'Little Surprised That They Traded Iglesias'
The trade deadline came and went on Wednesday and the Red Sox were quiet as they got their deal done late Tuesday night. The Red Sox acquired starting pitcher Jake Peavy from the Chicago White Sox.
The Red Sox are sending Jose Iglesias to Detroit as the other main player in the deal.
Boston also acquired Bryan Villareal from the Tigers. The Red Sox traded away minor league pitchers J.B. Wendelken and Francelis Montas and infielder Cleuluis Rondon to the White Sox, while the Tigers sent Avisail Garcia to the White Sox.
"I was a little surprised that they traded Iglesias," Red Sox insider Peter Abraham told Toucher & Rich on Thursday. "The Red Sox have not in the past traded guy who are big parts of teams that are in contention, but if you had said a couple of months ago that you'd get Jake Peavy for Jose Iglesias you probably would have burst out laughing at the idea."
Now with Iglesias gone what could this Red Sox infield look like if they were to make the post season?
"I was talking about that with someone last night. Who's the third baseman in the first game of the playoffs for the Red Sox if they get there? You don't really know, it could be Middlebrooks, it could be Bogaerts, it could be almost anybody at this point. So it's interesting that a team this good doesn't really know who their third baseman is because that would seem like a pretty important position. I would think at some point soon you'd see Middlebrooks back up with a chance to reclaim his position..."
