Olympic Runner From Topsfield, Competitor Help Each Other Up In Powerful Display Of Sportsmanship
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (CBS/AP) -- A Topsfield native competing in the Rio Olympics helped a competitor up after a collision during the Women's 5000 meter track and field event Tuesday.
Abbey D'Agostino tripped over New Zealand runner Nikki Hamblin during the race's second heat, and both ended up on the track.
In a powerful display of sportsmanship, D'Agostino then got up to help Hamblin, who was sprawling on the ground.
Then, as D'Agostino hobbled on what appeared to be a right ankle injury, Hamblin tried to help her continue.
Hamblin finished 29th, While D'Agostino finished 30th. The two runners embraced after finishing the race.
D'Agostino was then taken from the track in a wheelchair.
