Jose Baez To Represent Aaron Hernandez In Boston Double Murder Trial
BOSTON (CBS) – Former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has a new high profile attorney to represent him at his upcoming double murder trial.
Jose Baez was the lead defense attorney in Casey Anthony's murder trial in 2011. A jury in Florida acquitted Anthony in the killing of her daughter, Caylee.
Baez will serve as Hernandez's lead counsel. "Mr. Hernandez strongly maintains his innocence, and I plan to establish that before a jury of his peers," Baez said in a statement.
Hernandez is serving a life sentence after being convicted last year in a murder near his home in North Attleboro. He is awaiting trial in the killings of two men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in 2012.
Prosecutors say Hernandez allegedly ambushed and shot the men after one accidentally bumped him and spilled his drink at a Boston nightclub.
Hernandez's legal team will also consist of Harvard Law Professor Ronald S. Sullivan Jr., defense attorney Alex Spiro, and forensic science counsel Linda Kenney Baden.
