A Taste of Spring...

What a day!  It certainly felt, sounded and smelled like Spring...those last two aren't that obvious but I noticed a ton of bird chirping and maybe it was just the smell of melting snow but if I closed my eyes I was imagining April...or maybe I'm just weird...probably the later!

Today's high of 52 was the warmest since January 1st when it hit 56 degrees and the first time it has hit 50 since January 2nd.  No record by the way...that still stands at 59 degrees set in 1946 and 1884.  I was looking at some climo stats today on the number of 50 degree days in January and February and we average 3.5 days of 50 better in January and 4.1 in February...FYI.  So I hope your blood didn't thin too much with today's warmth because a powerful coldfront is slicing through the Northeast tonight and temps will plummet under some intense cold air advection and most towns will be in the upper teens by morning!  Along with the cold comes very strong wind and there is a Wind Advisory in place from the Weather Service through tomorrow morning gusts could reach 50 mph...it's going to be a loud night with the wind knocking up against the house!  High pressure will be building in and will prohibit cloud development.  The same high that delivers the cold will deliver another thaw for the second half of the week.  The high will slide overhead on Wednesday so we will be transitioning out of the cold and into the warm again by Thursday.  There is some question as to how much Boston will warm and will Logan touch 50 Thursday afternoon if I had to bet on it I'd say no, not Thursday but surely Friday when we a once again in a warm sector.  Another temps plunge is expected over the upcoming weekend with highs in the 30s once again.

It looks as if the next several weeks may end up following more of a traditional La Nina pattern...one that most were forecasting at the start of the Winter...with bouts of mild and periods of cold and less of a Gulf Coast / SE US storm blossoming area.
