9th Indictment For Habitual Drunk Driver
FALL RIVER (AP) - A grand jury has indicted a Rhode Island man who was arrested in Massachusetts for the ninth time on drunken driving charges.
A Bristol County Grand Jury on Friday indicted 52-year-old Vernon Perry on charges of operating under the influence and operating a motor vehicle to endanger.
The East Providence man remains in custody without bail. No date has been set for his arraignment in Fall River Superior Court.
Perry pleaded not guilty in a lower court following his arrest last weekend in Seekonk.
Registry of Motor Vehicles spokeswoman Ann Dufresne says Perry refused to take a blood alcohol test, triggering a lifetime license suspension under provisions of the 2005 "Melanie's Law" which imposes new safeguards to keep repeat offenders off the road.
It was not immediately clear if he has legal representation.
