7-Year-Old Girl Hit And Killed By SUV In Dorchester

BOSTON (CBS) – A 7-year-old girl has died after she and her mother were hit by a SUV while they were walking on Olney Street in Dorchester Tuesday afternoon.

The driver, 36-year-old Olivia Mora of Dorchester, has been charged with Motor Vehicle Homicide and Operating Under the Influence.

The child was taken to Boston Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. The girl's mother was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Yvette Downey lives right next door to the scene. She ran out of her house after she heard the SUV hit a fire hydrant and plow into her neighbor's yard.

"We saw her take her last breath really right here," Downey explains.

Witnesses say Mora also hit a car belonging to Ibrantino Alves, who lives on the other side of the accident scene, just before she jumped the curb. Hours later, Alves still teared up explaining what he witnessed.

"I've never seen a little kid die in front of me before," he says. "We was all on the scene and you could see the little girl just trying to fight for her life and she just stopped."

Mora allegedly tried to put the car into reverse after the crash, but neighbors stopped her.

The mother and child were walking home from school when they were hit by the car. There will be counselors on hand Wednesday at the school the girl attended.

"Our hearts are breaking for this young child's family and this loss affects every one of us," a Boston Public Schools spokesman said in a statement. "We will have counselors on hand tomorrow at Holland Elementary to help our students, staff and school community cope, and we hope everyone will keep this family in their thoughts and prayers."

Mora will be arraigned on Wednesday.
