60 Minutes: A-Rod Implicated Braun, Cervelli In Biogenesis Scandal
BOSTON (CBS) - As other players sit out and serve their suspensions for the recent Biogenesis scandal that rocked Major League Baseball, Alex Rodriguez continues to play as he appeals his 211 game ban.
And, according to a report by CBS' "60 Minutes," members of Rodriguez's "inner circle" helped lead to a pair of those suspensions.
Rodriguez's "inner circle" reportedly leaked documents implicating Yankees teammate Francisco Cervelli and Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun.
In January, a Miami New Times report originally linked Rodriguez to Biogenesis -- the Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing PEDs. Both Braun and Cervelli's names were redacted from that report, but according to "60 Minutes,":
Members of Rodriguez's camp at the time obtained unredacted versions and leaked them to Yahoo! Sports, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter. The unredacted documents also implicated Baltimore Oriole Danny Valencia, who MLB later investigated and cleared.
Rodriguez's lawyer has denied the allegations.
"The allegations are untrue and are another attempt to harm Alex — this time by driving a wedge between Alex and other players in the game," A-Rod's lawyer, David Cornwell, said in a statement to "60 Minutes." "While Alex focuses on baseball and repeatedly states that he is going to respect the appeal process, the drumbeat of false allegations continues."
Braun, who adamantly denied using PEDs in the past, accepted a 65-game ban from MLB on July 22. Cervelli and 11 other players were suspended 50 games last week for their ties to Biogenesis, while Rodriguez was hit with a 211-game ban.
But Rodriguez appealed, and has been playing with the Yankees since the suspensions were handed down.
Preview: Rodriguez, Yankees Come To Boston For 3-Game Set
