5 Years Of 98.5 The Sports Hub: The Best Of Gresh & Zolak

BOSTON (CBS) - It's hard to believe it's been half of a decade, but 98.5 The Sports Hub is turning five years old this week.

To help ring in this special occasion, we're reliving all the classic moments from each show — handpicked by the on-air staff!

So without further ado, here's the Best Of Gresh & Zolak:

Gresh & Zo Simulcast With Montreal's Tony Marinaro

From April 14, 2011:

Gresh & Zo simulcasted with Tony Marinaro, the host of The Montreal Forum on Team 990 AM in Montreal.

The gloves come off as soon as it begins and there's no relenting. Montreal calls out Gresh, Zo, Felger, Jack Edwards and more.

Oh, and apparently Montreal fans know more about the Boston Bruins than the Bruins fans do. But don't worry Boston, Gresh and Zo blast back.

Great radio and truly must listen!

Did Scott Zolak Steal A Slice Of Pizza?

This is a cold case that remains unsolved. Any information on the crime please call the CBS Radio Boston front desk.

From April 10, 2014:

During lunch, 98.5 The Sports Hub's promotions manager Chris Rucker ordered and picked up a personal pan pizza from Uno's, but just as he sat down to eat it at his desk he was called into another room to handle something that came up.

When Rucker came back to his desk to eat his pizza, he noticed something peculiar: a slice was missing.

What happened to his pizza?

Well there's only one way to find out, and that's checking the surveillance footage.

You see, what the unsuspecting thief failed to realize is that there are numerous cameras located around the promotions office. After checking the tape Rucker thinks he has a suspect picked out, because shortly after he leaves the office, in walks the one and only Scott Zolak.

If you watch the video, you'll see the pizza in a bag seated firmly on Ruck's desk. Zo walks in and begins small-talking the street teamers, who can't see what's going on because of an office divided by partitions.

Zo fumbles around for awhile inside the bag and appears to hide something in his sleeve, but dislodging that first slice from the rest of the pie is the hardest, so it would take the hands of a magician to pull that off unnoticed.

Keep in mind that Zolak has a reputation around the office for this sort of thing. Rucker is convinced Zolak is the culprit, but others feel the evidence is inconclusive. . . what do you think?

Gresh Calls Nomar Garciaparra A Loser

Back when the midday show was still "Tanguay & Zolak," Andy Gresh just happened to be filling in on the day the Red Sox signed former shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to a one-day contract, so that he can retire with the team and take a job at ESPN.

After his press conference he joined Tanguay & Gresh to talk about his retirement, but the interview didn't go so well. In fact, it caused quite the stir.

Festivus: The Airing Of Sports Grievances

At the end of every calendar year since the two have had a show on 98.5FM, Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak have hosted Festivus, giving the chance for people to call in and air out their sports grievances.

From 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and beyond, it's a time-honored tradition on the Gresh & Zolak show that's not going away anytime soon.

"Unicorns! Show Ponies! Where's The Beef?!"

From October 13, 2013:

You had to know this was coming, right?

Down 27-23 late in the fourth quarter in Week 6 against New Orleans, Tom Brady marched the Patriots 70 yards down the field with no timeouts after getting the ball with 1:08 left on the clock.

Brady got the Patriots within reach and threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins with five seconds left to give the Pats a wild 30-27 win, plus one of the most memorable broadcasting calls in recent years.

Gresh & Zo Simulcast With Houston Sports Radio

Remember when the Texans were good? Seems so long ago.

This dates back to when Dan Shaughnessy called Houston "tomato cans" and Zo agreed with that assessment by calling them frauds. Houston sports radio didn't take too kindly to that.

From January 10, 2013:

Nobody does simulcasts like 98.5 The Sports Hub!

On Thursday, Gresh & Zolak joined forces with 610 Sports Radio's In The Loop With Nick and Lopez out of Houston to preview Sunday's Patriots-Texans Divisional playoff game at Gillette Stadium.

Things get a little heated with a war of words at first, but they eventually get to football.

Listen in as Gresh and Zo make the case for the Patriots, while Nick and Lopez -- joined by former Patriots' linebacker Ted Johnson -- try to sell the Texans' chances on Sunday.

Looking Back At Gresh's College Football Days At URI

From January 5, 2012:

The guys at the Sports Hub dug up an article from the URI website and had a few laughs at the expense of Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak.

Included in the article were old pictures of Gresh suited up as an offensive lineman at URI. What do the guys think of Andy's three-point stance?

Zolak Learns That 'Y' Is Sometimes A Vowel

From March 3, 2014:

Every elementary school student learns it early in their lives: A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y.

Scott Zolak, however, was apparently absent on the day that was taught in his school, and he adamantly argued that "Y" is not a vowel during Monday's show.

Zo was discussing his dislike for the show "Caillou," and it made him think: What kind of person gives their kid a name that ends in a vowel?

Andy Gresh and Hardy were quick to point out that Zolak's own children have names that end in "y."

That's when the debate got heated.

"Y is not a vowel! It's a consonant!" Zolak screamed. "Y is not a vowel! I play Scrabble! You ever do Wheel of Fortune? It's not a vowel. You can't buy a Y."

The text and phone lines lit up, with Zo commenting that the show got more reaction out of this debate than it did out of Bruins trade deadline talk.

"That's because you came out and said, 'Who has a vowel at the end of their kids' names?' and we gave you pretty much everyone who works here. And your own children," Gresh said.

Zolak, whose mother was a middle school English teacher, remained adamant that "Y" is not a vowel, even in the face of overwhelming evidence against him.

"It's not a vowel. It's amazing that you could think it's a vowel," he said.

Gresh then read from the dictionary: "The letter 'Y' stands for a consonant in 'yolk' but for a vowel in 'myth.'"

"You just clarified that technically it is a consonant. In a mythological word, where Zeus, Poseidon, all those people exist. It's just said in myths! It's not both, it was a clarification that when 'Y' is used as a vowel, it is in mythology."

Gresh & Zo Dump Snow On Fred Toucher's Car

From February 5, 2014:

The weather outside is frightful, and for Fred Toucher not so delightful.

Anybody listening to Fred this morning knows how miserable he was doing radio in yet another blizzard, which made Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak equally as miserable.

But when they arrived in the parking lot this morning to prepare for their show, misery turned into creativity and an idea was born to bury Fred's car in snow.

Gresh and Zo tried to play as coy as possible during the crossover, and minutes into their show an agitated Fred comes bursting back into the studio.

Ty Law: 'No Matter Where I Was At, I Was Always A Patriot To The Core'

From May 20, 2014:

Ty Law was as clutch a player there was to ever suit up here in New England -- for any sport, not just football.

His highlight reel could fill a full length picture, and it's hard to nail down one singular play that best encapsulates his career.

If you ask Law to pick his best, one super play comes to mind.

"I would say the interception versus the Rams. I mean, I have a lot of signature moments myself, but I think everyone else would think about the first Super Bowl that we won with the Rams and the key interception. I think that sticks out in everyone's mind," said Law.

What made the nomination so special to Law is that the vote was up to the fans. Ty Law did not spend his entire career with the Patriots like Tedy Bruschi and Troy Brown did.

However, fans always showed him love and that's what was important to him. He was always a Patriot, even if he happened to be wearing a different uniform.

"This game is a business as we all know. Some things are out of your control. But I tell you what, the fans of New England they stuck by me through thick and thin, even when I was playing for the other team," said Law. "They've supported me off the field in my business endeavors, and continue to do so. I'm indebted to the fans here of New England. They didn't take it that personal when I left. For the most part, as a whole, they stuck by me 100 percent.

"No matter where I was at I was a Patriot to the core. I might have been playing for another team because that's the nature of the business, but in my heart deep down I was a Patriot. I've never signed my retirement papers because if I wasn't signing as a New England Patriot I'm just going to walk off into the sunset, because my heart was there."
