South Boston Church Fire
Flames broke out just after 9 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Albanian Orthodox Church on Broadway and quickly poked through the roof.
As many as 90 firefighters responded. Eight of them were hurt, but none seriously.
All were ordered out of the building because the interior ceiling started to collapse, according to Boston Fire.
There's no word yet on what caused the fire, but Deputy Chief Robert Calabrisi told reporters it appears to have started on or near the altar. Investigators do not believe the fire is suspicious.
Damage is estimated at $1 million.
A nun came by with a message for worshipers letting them know that St. Vincent's is offering to let them use their church for the time being.
West Broadway, F Street and Athens Street are closed because of the response to the fire and the investigation.
Boston Fire said they will remain on scene into the night on Wednesday in case of flare ups.
Neighbors have been evacuated because the building is in danger of collapsing. The Red Cross is assisting those affected.
