33 Guinea Pigs Up For Adoption After Being Removed From NH Home

METHUEN (CBS) --- Thirty-three guinea pigs are up for adoption at the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at Nevins Farm after being removed from a Chester, New Hampshire home.

The owner, a woman who was not identified, was breeding the guinea pigs and selling them to local pet stores. She intended to only turn over two guinea pigs to the MSPCA, but when the agency discovered more, they forced her to give up all 33.

Mike Keiley, director of the Noble Family Animal Care and Adoption Center at Nevins Farm, said the center is looking for many foster homes and adopters.

"It's a tremendous strain on our resources whenever we have a surrender of so many animals at once," Keiley said.

Ten adult male guinea pigs are currently up for adoption at the Nevins Farm location. The MSPCA said the baby pigs can be adopted in mid-November. The two adult females will be observed by the MSPCA to see if they are pregnant.

The MSPCA set up a donations page to help care for the guinea pigs.
